TOKYO — The imperial family on Sunday celebrated the first
birthday of Princess Aiko, the daughter of Crown Prince Naruhito and
Princess Masako, with a lunch, tea ceremony and dinner, the Imperial
Household Agency said.
The couple brought the little princess to see Emperor Akihito and
Empress Michiko in the Imperial Palace in the morning to report on her
first birthday, agency officials said.
They then held a lunch for her at the Crown Prince's Palace in Tokyo's
Motoakasaka, after which a tea ceremony was held that was attended by some
30 people including Hiroo Kanno, who was grand master of the prince's
household when he married in June 1993.
In the afternoon, the couple held a dinner at the prince's palace with
his parents, younger brother Prince Akishino and his wife Princess Kiko.
Princess Aiko, who weighs 9.32 kilograms and is 74.2 centimeters tall,
is growing steadily and is bigger than the average 1-year-old, according
to the agency.
She weighed 3.10 kg and was 49.6 cm tall at birth.
She is the only child of the 42-year-old prince and his 38-year-old
wife and the third grandchild of the emperor and empress. Prince Akishino
and Princess Kiko have two daughters, princesses Mako and Kako. (Kyodo
