Virtual fireplaces

Wallpaper for fish tanks, marketed in 2000 to cure GDD — Goldfish Depressive Disorder — was doomed to fail, the main drawback being the difficulty pet owners had seeing the genki fish in front of the Horny Toad, Sexy Octopus or appetizing Fish Food Yellow images. More successful were DVD gizmos, converting TVs across the nation into "Seaman" — Sega Industries' virtual carp video.

Now Digital Fireplaces has released a line of virtual fireplaces, with models boasting digitally enhanced images and sounds from real wood-burning fires onto high resolution monitors "for apartments, restaurants and motor coaches."

The company claims the monitors are normally invisible to the untrained observer "if correctly placed" — presumably underneath a mantelpiece rather than a steering wheel.
